Copper Mountain, Colorado

Date: Mar 2-9, 2024
Trip Leaders: Steven Krapes, Raghu Naik

The Holmdel 2024 trip to Copper mountain in Colorado was a wonderful experience. Our 25 members came from many different parts of the country. The main group of 13 from Newark had some confusion with which terminal United was using for our flight, but soon we all met and got together. Eleven more members met us at Denver airport coming from their own booked flights. The bus ride to the Cambria Hotel at Copper was quick and smooth. We did not make a grocery/liquor stop this time as we had an orientation with the Ambassadors with a tight schedule. (Copper Ambassadors are the green-coat on-mountain guest services volunteers that help guests with knowing the resort and the ski slopes.) At the Cambria, the Holmdel Ski club “family” from across the continent met with one other member arriving by car. At the Cambria we met up with Steve, our treasurer and also an Ambassador at Copper.  With him were two more Ambassadors. We were very lucky to have two Ambassadors give us an all-day mountain tour the next day, and we had Steve guide many of us all week to secret stashes and great skiing.

Conditions at Copper were amazing. It was fortunate that it snowed 9" the night we arrived, and several smaller dumps while we were there. Fresh powder and both snowy and bluebird days. 2500 acres, tree skiing, expert to beginner trails. Everyone found somewhere to ski to fill their wants.

Tuesday evening the HSC hosted a dinner at the Eagle BBQ, where the group had a lovey time. Each person could order what they wanted at the BBQ stand and the Club picked up the tab. We had a room to ourselves, and a long tradition of having a group get together was enjoyed by all.  Copper had many places to eat, drink and be merry, pool tables, table tennis, hot tubs, gyms and all else. A wonderful place for a ski club to base their trip.  Everything you could want was within an easy walk of Center Village. An enjoyable lunch venue was Flyer's, a log cabin below the top of American Flyer lift. There they had elk sausage, hot dogs, chilli, and drinks. On a sunny day it was joyous to order the elk and sit outside in the sun.

On Thursday we started seeing the start of the preparations for the Dew Tour of freestyle skiing, snowboarding and half pipe. Friday things kicked of with lots of energy, bands, free drinks, games, and amazing skiers and snowboarders. We got too much snow to have the half pipe tournament on Friday, so we missed out on seeing that competition.

Happy to report we had no injuries on the trip. Most everyone agreed that Copper mountain is a great ski mountain. Saturday was a bit of a difficult travel day to an early check out as well as some major flight delays, we ended up meeting another ski club at the airport where we saw some old friends.

Steve and Raghu would like to thank everyone for enjoying this trip with the Holmdel Ski Club. We look forward to many more years of skiing as we have all been a skiing family for many many years.
