The Snowbird trip
had 34
people, 25 flying with us on Delta from Newark to Salt Lake City, 8
meeting us in Cliff Lodge at Snowbird, and 1 driving to Snowbird. Delta
baggage fees were $30 for the first checked bag and $40 for the second
checked bag each way. A ski package consists of skis & poles in a ski
bag and a boot bag. About half of the group brought their own ski
equipment.
Unfortunately,
we were unable start our trip on January 29 due to blizzard that dumped
more than foot of snow around the New York City area. As a result, our
original flight out of Newark NJ was canceled. We were able to rebook
our flight but not for the entire group to fly on the same day due to
flights being full on the days after the storm. Part of the group flew
on Sunday night and another on Monday morning. Transportation for all
participants from the Salt Lake City airport to the hotel was smooth and
on time, supplied by Canyon Transportation.
The
Cliff Lodge, slopeside at Snowbird, was a very good choice and we had
spectacular views of the mountain.
The rooms
were large. Baggage handling was included. The Cliff Lodge provided a
welcome breakfast for our group on Tuesday. The Lodge had on-site ski
rental and repair shop and complimentary ski lockers. Participants had
direct access to the slopes. The skiing at Snowbird had a variety of
groomed and ungroomed runs. Off piste cover was good. The weather
presented some challenges as cold temperatures and flat light were
common. Mountain Hosts (tour guides) were available every morning at
9:30 AM or 10:30 AM, and highly valued by our members. Many of our
members spend several days at Alta ski resort, taking advantage of the
Ikon pass' joint access. Alta is a fantastic mountain with long runs and
convenient access from Snowbird. After a day on the mountain, our
members were able to relax at the outdoor pool or The Cliff Spa.
 On
the third night the Club sponsored a pizza party.
Many toasts and accompanied laughter filled the evening. The trip leader
and multiple assistants organized the space for our group in Snowbird
Center, which was a 5 minute walk from the hotel. For dinner on the
other nights, there were restaurants in the hotel and many restaurants
within a 5 min walk (or shuttle ride) from the hotel with large variety
of food.
Saturday morning (6:00 AM) was the departure day for most of our
members. It was imperative that each of our member’s bags had our Club's
colorful luggage tags so that we could differentiate our bags from
others. By 6:15 AM we were on our way to the airport. Luckily, our
return direct flight to Newark was smooth and on time. We had no luggage
issues.
